  1. Generate sales this Father’s Day – Sunday 16th June 2013

    Father’s day is one of the busier times of the year for restaurants and pubs, and being on a Sunday, outlets really have the opportunity to generate some tasty lunchtime sales.

    Many sons and daughters will be planning days out for their Dads and will be looking for the perfect place to stop for lunch. Wraps are an ideal ingredient for chefs to stock up on as they will be able to use these for main meals or light lunch options. Why not try serving Chicken Quesadillas with a side of tortilla chips for an authentic Mexican dish, or offer Fajitas with the consumer’s choice of filling such as chicken, beef or vegetables.     In order to make the most of Father’s Day, outlets should make sure they promote their offering in advance by using boards, whilst table talkers are a great way of communicating a specific message to customers. If an outlet sends out regular newsletters and has a substantial customer database, it would be a good idea to include the Father’s Day Menu as part of this to target regulars. To tempt new customers, outlets should use their website and social media, as well as display menu boards outside the premises if possible.

  2. Celebrate British Sandwich Week

    This year, we are urging caterers to celebrate British Sandwich Week (12th – 19th May) by refreshing their menu and using wraps as an alternative carrier to bread.

    British Sandwich Week is the ideal opportunity to try out new fillings, variations and drive trial. With the recent growth in the on the go market, wraps make a convenient carrier for a range of fillings, whilst health conscious consumers often favour wraps. Indeed the latest data from Technomic Research reveals there has been substantial growth in the tortilla wrap market, with wraps tripling in use on full service restaurant sandwich menus between 2010 and 20111.

    • Drive footfall during British Sandwich Week by offering a meal deal. Offer a sandwich or wrap, a drink and a snack for a set price.
    • Make comment cards available during the week so that your customers can let you know which sandwiches or wraps they’d like to see on the menu permanently.
    • Run a competition where consumers can suggest their ideal sandwich or wrap. The winner can enjoy their creation complimentary and have it put on the menu.
    • Use table talkers and special boards to remind consumers that it is British Sandwich Week and promote your sandwich and wrap offering.

  4. Mission Foodservice brings more choice to breakfast with Fruited Flatbreads

    Mission Foodservice has unveiled a new range consisting of three Fruited Flatbreads, allowing operators to drive breakfast and snack. The three flavours – Honey and Raisin, Berry and Seed and Orange and Cranberry – give consumers a low-fat option with an indulgent taste, suiting a range of occasions and appetites.

    Dave Edwards, Head of Sales for Mission Foodservice said: “Breakfast presents a real opportunity for operators; 21% of British consumers eat breakfast away from home and 8% do this at least once a week, yet there has been little innovation in the breakfast category in recent years and Mission Fruited Flatbreads will address this.

    “The new flatbreads breads offer a change from the usual breakfast menu items such as toast, croissants or Danish pastries, and with a fat content of less than 3% compared to a croissant at circa 25%, they also provide consumers with a significantly healthier option. They are crammed full of fruit (Cranberry & Orange) and seeds (Berry & Seed) and still remain a flavourful and indulgent treat.

    “When consumers are on the move, they’re looking for a quick, tasty, easy to handle product and preferably one that is a complete meal and good value for money. Mission Fruited Flatbreads fit the bill and we know this from the great feedback the range received during taste tests.

    “Mission Fruited Flatbreads were developed to give consumers a satisfying breakfast solution, but at the same time we also wanted to introduce a product that would work equally well later in the day as a snack and one that operators could add accompaniments to, creating a bigger meal with a higher price-point. We’re confident that the new range achieves this.”

    The new range was also designed to give operators ultimate convenience; the flatbreads can be thawed and served as is but also toasted from frozen, making the breakfast service as quick and simple as possible and meaning that operators don’t need to remember to defrost them the night before.

    They work well as a single breakfast item but are also ideal for operators needing to create an attractive breakfast buffet with minimum effort.

    The versatility of the range means they can be served alone or with any number of sweet or savoury toppings and this isn’t limited to breakfast; they are ideal alternatives to teacakes or scones as part on an afternoon tea, or served with ice-cream as part of an indulgent dessert.

  7. Mission Foods helps Benito’s Hat create UK’s biggest burrito

    Visitors to Benito’s Hat Mexican Kitchen in London were treated to a rare sight this week – a 65-foot tortilla wrap. The biggest burrito ever seen in Britain was rolled to give a free lunch to Mexican food fans and raised money for homeless charity, StreetSmart.

    Just one man with a mission – and a kitchen – lay behind the colossal creation: Benito’s Hat head chef and partner Felipe Fuentes Cruz and Mission Foods was right there to support him every step of the way with our flour tortillas.

    Largest London Burrito

    Felipe single-handedly built the giant burrito, with musical accompaniment from a much-loved Mexican mariachi band.

    Containing more than 30kg of the freshest ingredients, the burrito was a supersize version of the best-selling chicken variety (with a vegetarian section to make sure all customers were happy).

    The giant burrito in numbers:

    • 11kg chicken
    • 5kg of fresh tomatoes
    • 3.5kg of tomatillos
    • 0.5kg of coriander
